Castlefield, Manchester, UK

The Castlefield area of Central Manchester is the site of a Roman outpost, possibly known as Mancunium. In the 1700's and 1800's three major canals were joined there, and important rail connections crossed it.

From the early 1900's it fell into disrepair but in the last few years it has been restored to the result you can see in the pictures linked from here, becoming part of the cultural heart of the city.
